E-forum on Sustainability Assessment of Food and

FAO is pleased to invite you to participate to a moderated E-forum on Sustainability Assessment of Food  and Agricultural Systems, starting on Monday 21st February 2011 and running till 25 March 2011.

As part of the process of preparing for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012, FAO would like to bridge the requirements of governments with the interests of the private sector and the livelihoods of farmers.  More specifically , we would like to develop  international guidelines, based on existing practices, to help the path towards sustainability within the food chain. To this end, we seek to develop, together with you, a universal framework on sustainability issues, as well as guidelines, complete with indicators, that could be used by food manufacturers and retailers.

Many of you have extensively worked last years on delivering sustainability at every step of your work: we now wish to capitalize on your experience and expertise in order to shape a universal tool for assessing sustainability of the food chain.

To start the discussion, we have prepared a concept note with draft indicators that are based on a review of corporate responsibility and sustainability reports. We would especially encourage you to share with us your views on this. Our goal is to make this forum a lively and collaborative platform.

We look forward to your registration and active participation in the discussions at: http://www.fao.org/rio20/e-forum/en/

Please circulate this invitation among your members and other interested stakeholders!

Cheers,
