on Intellectual Property Issues (Dec20/05) Dear friends and colleagues, We are pleased to share with you a new TWN-Madhyam Briefing Paper that provides the background and issues related to the TRIPS Waiver Proposal that was initiated by India and South Africa. The paper is available here: India-South Africa proposal for a waiver from certain obligations under the TRIPS Agreement by Biswajit Dhar and K.M. Gopakumar. https://twn.my/title2/briefing_papers/twn/TRIPS%20waiver The proposal has now garnered the support of about 100 developing and least developed countries. There is growing worldwide support from civil society organisations, patient advocacy groups, academics, lawmakers and international organisations. The WTO TRIPS Council will hold its next discussion on this crucial issue on 10 December 2020, that is appropriately Human Rights Day commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. Mainstream media is also covering the Waiver Proposal. A recent opinion piece was recently published in the New York Times: Want Vaccines Fast? Suspend Intellectual Property Rights — Otherwise, there won’t be enough shots to go around, even in rich countries (By Achal Prabhala, Arjun Jayadev and Dean Baker; Mr. Prabhala is a public health activist. Mr. Jayadev and Mr. Baker are economists): https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/opinion/covid-vaccines-patents.html With best wishes, Third World Network
