Dear Friends and Colleagues

“Nature-based solutions” (NbS) and claims about their mitigation potential

The term “nature-based solutions” (NbS) has recently attracted a great deal of attention and use, with a large emphasis put on the potential of nature to “solve” climate change. Based on an academic article, there are various claims now made that “nature” or NbS can meet “30%”, “around one-third” or “approximately one-third”, and “more than one-third” of the global mitigation goal under the Paris Agreement, in addition to the number published in the original paper: “37%”.

Experts have however raised a range of concerns about the assumptions and methodology in the original paper, and a consequent overestimation of actual mitigation potential.

We are pleased to share with you a new TWN Briefing Paper, “Nature-based solutions” (NbS) and claims about their mitigation potential, that examines misleading uses, inaccuracies, the assumptions used to generate the claims about the mitigation potential of nature, and the validity of those claims.

The paper concludes: “It is certainly critical to conserve biodiversity and natural ecosystems for many reasons, including because of the role they can play in both mitigation and adaptation, but this contribution should not be overstated or misused at the expense of doing nothing much about reducing emissions.”

With best wishes,
Third World Network
