Dear friends and colleagues

Coherent pathway forward needed for transformative biodiversity policy

We are pleased to highlight a new study, published by the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Climate Justice, Climate and Community Institute and Third World Network: Transformative Biodiversity Policy at a Stalemate: Consensus on ‘Age Old’ Problems, Coherent Pathway Forward Needed. The study builds on the first phase of a larger research project, which shows how governments in the Global South are “Exporting Extinction”, because financial and political subordination prevents them from implementing a just and ecological transition.

This latest study engaged biodiversity policy-makers and advocates in focus group discussions on the findings of the Exporting Extinction report (French and Spanish translations available). Bringing together key actors from different sets of expertise and institutional bases, it found that: 1) participants expressed a clear appetite for structural approaches to changing the political-economic “rules of the game,” namely international financial architecture reforms such as debt and tax justice, as well as trade and investment agreement reforms, but 2) despite this consensus, there was far from a shared theory of change or strategy for advancing structural change.

The report characterizes the current moment as a stalemate—strategically stagnant but also loaded with opportunities.

In a moment of fast-changing geo-political economic dynamics and uncertainties, pathways for intervention are emerging around reforming the international financial architecture and beyond. However, more organization, coordination and focus are required, if those changes are to be in line with diverse ecosystems and the realization of land, Indigenous, and human rights.

With best wishes,
