SELECTION OF THE WTO DIRECTOR-GENERAL: A DETAILED ACCOUNT AND ANALYSIS OF THE EVENTS AND IMPLICATIONS

BY CHAKRAVARTHI RAGHAVAN, SUNS (SOUTH-NORTH DEVELOPMENT MONITOR)

The process of selecting the new director-general of the WTO has been very contentious and led to a split in the organisation. It has exposed the lack of transparency and democracy in the decision- making process within the WTO. The attempts of a major power to manipulate the process has led to widespread discontent and outrage by a large number of Members.

The following is a series of four articles by Chakravarthi Raghavan, Chief Editor of the SUNS (South-North Development Monitor), providing an in-depth account and analysis of the recent developments in the selection process. The articles were published in the SUNS of 4, 6, 7 and 10 May 1999.
